Armament:
2 x M61A1 20mm Vulcan (AC-130H)
1 x GAU-12/U 25mm cannon (AC-130U)
1 x Bofors L-60 40mm cannon (H & U)
1 x M102 105mm Howitzer (H & U)

Overview:
The Lockheed AC-130 is a heavily armed gunship developed from the C-130 Hercules. The AC-130 is used for Close Air Support (CAS), air interdiction, force interdiction and Counter Insurgency Ops (COIN). There are currently two active variants of AC-130, the "H" and the "U" versions; the H model is equipped with two M61A1 20mm Vulcan cannons, a single 40mm L-60 Bofors gun and an M102 105mm howitzer. The U model also carries the Bofors gun and the howitzer but has the two Vulcans replaced with a single 25mm GAU-12/U Gatling gun.

A proposed upgrade program would have replaced some of the armaments on the existing AC-130s; these upgrades included replacing the 25mm GAU-12 and the 40mm Bofors with two Mk 44 Bushmaster 30mm cannons. However, the program was ultimately scrapped and the old armament was retained.

Personally, I think it's unfortunate that you don't get any of these on your side.

Oh, and as an interesting side note, I took a chance to take a look at one of this beasts up close in AC5, turns out they have Osean markings. See for yourself.

Here's an idea for AC7 - allow the player to advance ranks, eventually being able to coordinate attacks using gunships like the AC-130 among other extra weaponry. That way we can have our flying cake and make it help us win, too.

Tsgt Epps, ftw!

That is interesting, it's possible that Namco was orginally going to have AC-130s that were also used by Osea, but then they decided to 'give' them to Yuktobania...but forgot to change the markings.

Hmm... perhaps they were stolen by Belkan operatives? Maybe I'm giving Namco a bit too much credit on that; they aren't that committed to story details.

I personally think Namco is lazy in some cases. Like how they make the F-4 unflyable in AC6 among other interesting planes.

lol, someone might want to upgrade the article...
The plan to replace the 25mm Equalizer and 40mm Bofors has long been scrapped. The few planes that were converted with 30mm Mk 44 cannons had their 25mm and 40mm weapons re-installed due to poor performance of the 30mm several months ago.

And the 120mm mortar too. Even though it would have put less stress on the airframe when firing then the 105. I think they decided to wait until they near 'bout used up all the remaining 105mm shells.

Actually it's kind of difficult to fire a mortar from an aircraft since you have to fire them frome the muxzzle end. And the AC-130's 105 used special low velocity rounds as to not rip the plane apart due to the recoil.

Note... The 105mm Howizter is still in use by the 82nd Airborne, so the rounds are still produced.

Well, I don't know how the 120mm mortar worked, but I don't think you needed to reload it from the muzzle. But as for the stress, the muzzle blast from the 120mm put 25% less stess on the airframe than the 105. There's a graph that shows it somewhere, I'll look for it tomorrow.
