Overview:
The Georges Leygues class was introduced in 1979 as a multirole frigate, with surface-to-surface, surface-to-air, and anti-submarine capabilities. Although technically a destroyer, the term does not exist in French and the designation "frigate" is used instead. Later versions of the ship have a slightly altered bridge to increase performance in adverse conditions. The Leygues served as the basis for the later Cassard class.
