Background:
The Lockheed-Martin/Boeing YF-22, unofficially nicknamed "Lightning II" was an experimental fighter developed for the USAF’s Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) program in the late 1980s to replace the F-15 Eagle. The YF-22 would square off against the rival Northrop-McDonnell Douglas YF-23 in the early 1990s. Both planes were far more advanced than anything else flying at the time and they both performed with flying colors. Although many claimed that the YF-23 was a better performer, it in reality it really wasn't any better - in fact - no one can actually confirm whether it was or not. On the other hand, the YF-22 gave an equally - if not arguably better - performance than its rival. The YF-22 was tested in many important areas of flight, and unlike its rival, the YF-22 also was tested successfully in aerial refuelling, missile firing and extreme manoeuvring, something the Northrop team did not do.

In the end, despite the YF-23’s own successful performance; the YF-22 was instead selected by the Pentagon over the rival YF-23. It was rumoured that the decision was made to reward Lockheed for their on-time and under budget delivery of the F-117 Nighthawk. In reality it was due to the YF-22’s ease of manufacture and better adaptability to the Navy's NATF program that was going on at the time. Although the NATF was cancelled, the victorious YF-22 would eventually evolve into the USAF’s new 5th-generation fighter, the F-22 Raptor.

It would have been nice if the YF-22 was featured in AC5's plane upgrade system. They had the S-32 for the Su-47.

Well, the YF-22 wasn't all too different from the F-22... The S-32 and S-37 were very different, though based on the same concept.

The Ace Combat S-32 never even existed; that design was only on paper. In fact, what is now referred to as the Su-47 and use to be the S-37 was initially called the S-32.

Really? I thought the YF-22 had different specs compared to the production version. I could be wrong though.

There are airframe differences, and production fighters have much better avionics than the prototype that was designed 20 years ago. But that's just to be expected.

Can the YF-22 be used in AC2 by the player? I haven't been able to access it, only the YF-23.

laugh.gif Seriously? (J/K)

Well, to answer your question; yes it is flyable. But only with the 'Normal' aircraft selection.

It doesn't appear in the fighter list in normal. Only the Yf-23.

Is there something I'm missing?

Cause I've already beaten the game twice. Is there some special way to unlock it? blink.gif

Oh yeah forgot to say thank you. wink.gif Don't get me wrong I wasn't angry.

Dunno why NAMCO would choose the Yf-23 over the Yf-22. Maybe they thought the Yf-23 would end up being the ATF winner.

No problem. I just wish I could remember what mission you have to complete, in order to get the YF-22; I'll have to play through the campaign again...

Obviously, their 'prediction' turned out incorrect. tongue.gif

The YF-22 can be unlocked in both the mission 15A, St. Elmo's fire, by shooting all of the "named pilots", being Jian, Dao and Xiao, or 15B, Dead end, by shooting all of the pilots of the Fox Force Four squadron.

Notice: if you play in the "Normal" mode, you'll unlock the YF-22, if you play the "Extra" mode you'll unlock the XFA-27.

Hope it helps.

Ok I'll have to look into this. Will this work in Free mission mode? Or must I start a new game?
