Ace Combat Zero: The FAQ
Article Note: Fonce Diablo dialogue in grey colored text.

Let’s get the copyright out of the way…this guide is copywrit to me, Fonce Diablo, and so on and so forth, blah blah. Okay, only two sites have posting rights to this. AceCombatSkies.com is one, and the guys over at Electrosphere.info can post it there too if they’d like. Otherwise, write me first at fonce_diablo@yahoo.com. Please put “ACZ FAQ” in your subject line, otherwise, I’ll delete your message, and nobody wants that, right?

Now, let’s get on with it.

1.1 – Getting Started
1.2 – Controls/Reading the Radar/Ace Style
1.3 – Special Weapons
1.4 – Planes
1.5 – The Missions
1.6 – Unlocking Everything
1.7 – Gotta Down ‘Em All – The Solo Aces
1.8 - General Ace List

--- 1.1 - Getting Started ---

Welcome! We’re gonna poke around the menu for a second, because there is one thing you may be interested in changing around before you head out. That would be in Options --> Control Scheme, where you can pick from three control setups, which are:

1. The Ace Combat Zero type, where Square switches between missiles and SP Weapons and Select brings up the radar map
2. The original Ace Combat 5 type, where Select switches weapons and Square brings up the map, pressing harder causing the map to zoom out
3. And a slightly modified version of above, in which Square brings up the radar map, and hitting Square again does the zooming

Beyond this are the usual options menus, so we’ll move on from here and to…

--- 1.2 - Controls/Reading the Radar/Ace Style ---

There are two kinds of settings here, Novice and Normal. The only differences are that you can’t yaw in Novice, and moving the stick to the right or left will turn your plane automatically with no rolling.

X Button = Machine gun
Triangle Button = Target switch; hold in HUD view to zoom in on selected target
Square Button = Explained above in 1.1
Circle Button = Missile Launch
Select Button = Again, see above in 1.1
Start Button = Pauses the game
Left Analog = Rolls and changes the pitch of the plane’s nose; basically the steering
Right Analog = Moves the external camera around
L1 Button = Slow down
R1 Button = Speed up; push hard to engage afterburner
L2 Button = Yaw left in Normal mode
R2 Button = Yaw right in Normal mode
L3 Button (push in left analog) = Boresight Mode - brings up a circle; targets in or near that circle are automatically targeted
R3 button (push in right analog) = Switches camera view

Wingman command is back, and it again uses the D-Pad, with a slight modification.

D-Pad Up = Attack; send wingman at targets in front of you
D-Pad Down = Cover; wingman keeps enemy planes off your back
D-Pad Right = Allows wingman to use Special Weapon; never have this off
D-Pad Left = Disperse; press once for Free Disperse, again for Air Disperse, and again for Ground Disperse

I’m guessing you’ve seen the difference by now. The new stuff is easy; Air Disperse means the wingman goes for flying things only, Ground Disperse means he goes for only surface things, and Free Disperse means he can go for everything he can shoot at.

Now, the radar has changed…again. Here’s how to read it:

Red = Target
Green = Enemy
Yellow = Neutralized/Non-threat (I’ll explain this more in a minute)
Dot = Ground object
Arrow = Flying object

Yellow targets are the biggest determining factor of your Ace Style. What’s Ace Style? Well, here it is in simple form:

Mercenary: Kills everything
Knight: Kills only red and green things
Soldier: May kill some yellow things now and then, but never kills all of them

Take note, sometimes, nailing a plane will neutralize it and not destroy it, turning it yellow on your radar. Knights leave these alone, Mercenaries kill them. They won’t fire back at you anymore, so it’s really up to you as to what you wanna do.

That should just about do it for the basics, now let’s get over to the fun stuff…

--- 1.3 - Special Weapons ---

You can once again choose the special weapon for your plane! Yay! The weapons you can have in the whole game (in no particular order) are as follows…

UGB – Little unguided bomb. Droppable in groups of four. Decent area of effect, but one bomb ain’t gonna do much damage.

UGBL – Large unguided bomb. Droppable in pairs. Absolutely crazy damage over a big area of effect.

NPB – Remember this? It’s the napalm bomb. More planes carry it now, but…I’m still not sold on it’s effectiveness.

GPB – A guided bomb. Has a lock-on, so you don’t need to aim. Big time damage, limited area of effect.

RCL – Rocket launcher. If you have good aim, it’s rather effective. You can even shoot down planes with it, which is simply hilarious.

XAGM – Short-range ground missile. You can launch four of these at four targets at once. Very good damage, but no real area of effect.

LAGM – Super-extreme range ground missile. Has roughly the damage rating of a UGBL, and is thus pretty useful.

LASM – Super-extreme range…anti-ship missile? Well, you can use it on anything on the ground, too. Nowhere near the damage of an LAGM, but is great for SAM sweeping.

FAEB - …ultimate bomb of death. I’m not kidding. Drop a pair of these into a cluster of enemies and they’ll simply cease to be.

BDSP – Drops a whole bunch of tiny bombs. If you were to dive-bomb using this, all those little bombs would fall in a small area and cause lots of damage to lots of stuff.

SFFS – It’s a cluster bomb. Do the math.

SOD – Basically a BDSP missile. It takes the little bombs to the enemy, instead of you having to fly over the enemy and drop them.

SAAM – Semi-Active Air Missile! Fire at a hapless enemy, keep said hapless enemy in the big green missile steering circle, and much exploding will ensue. Additionally vicious over AC5 version.

XMAA – Medium-range air missile. Droppable in fours at four targets. Powerful, accurate, and versatile.

XLAA – Long-range air missile. Droppable in fours at four targets. Powerful, again, but not nearly as accurate as the XMAA.

QAAM – It’s like a super standard missile, except it’ll chase the target around if it misses. Not the AC04 vengeance missile, but still more powerful than the standard fare.

TLS – Yes, the laser thingy is back. Point and shoot, and whatever this thing hits will pretty much be vaporized.

MPBM – This is the all-new vengeance missile. It’s basically the Scinfaxi burst missile, except now plane-portable. They have the effectiveness of small nukes.

ECMP – The only defensive SP Weapon, this jams enemy radar, so missiles can’t smoke you. That’s a good thing.

--- 1.4 – Planes ---

In ACZ, unlike AC5, the statistics are shown in a hexagonal radar fashion (like AC3, not the bars of AC04…did you guys get all that?), without any numbers. So, I really can’t give you an accurate representation of the plane’s abilities, and therefore, will just have to wing it using a bunch of descriptors. Forgive me.

1. F-5E Tiger II – Starting Plane

52 Missiles
4 QAAM
8 UGB
8 NPB ($4,300)

Ah, yes, the little F-5E is back, and it’s still just as…er…okay, look, the F-5E is little, and it’s controllable, but it suffers from a lack of weapons load, and yaw performance, and roll performance, and…it’s a starting plane, come on! Given all that, though, it will not annoy you if you should choose to use this plane for the first couple of missions.

2. F-1 – Starting Plane

56 Missiles
10 RCL
12 UGB ($4,600)
10 LASM ($5,100)

Same agility as the F-5E, however, given its ground attack role, it’s more stable at low speed. It’s a surprisingly efficient gun platform, too. However, it can’t really roll too well…look at the size of it’s wings in comparison to it’s body…but it does yaw acceptably. Fortunately for you, your wingman can pretty much keep planes off you now, so, feel free to pick this plane for heavily ground attack missions, as it is quite good at those.

3. J-35J Draken – Starting Plane

50 Missiles
8 SAAM
8 UGB ($4,000)
8 RCL ($4,400)

You probably won’t even consider using those other planes, because the Draken is more agile. And it has an acceptable load of air-to-air special weapons. It can even do anti-surface work…to a point. It may have fewer regular missiles, but the boost in agility more than compensates for that, in my view.

4. MiG-21bis Fishbed - $8,500

56 Missiles
8 RCL
10 UGB ($3,100)
6 QAAM ($3,700)

Good grief…don’t even bother. Sure, it’s fast…oh man is it fast…but it’s an F-5E that you have to pay for, and nobody wants that. The two extra QAAMs would be nice…if the QAAM was the ultimate missile of AC04 lore. Otherwise, this plane is way too fragile, and dislikes being shot at.

5. F-4E Phantom II - $14,000

62 Missiles
6 SAAM
8 UGBL ($6,300)
10 NPB ($5,100)

You can forget the unhappy mobility, you can excuse the ugliness, because the F-4E with the UGBL is a good thing. At heart, this beast is no more than a strike fighter that may carry SAAMs on occasion, so use it accordingly.

6. MiG-29A Fulcrum - $30,000

60 Missiles
12 SAAM
10 RCL ($10,700)
12 XAGM ($11,900)

You’ll have noticed a price jump between F-4 Land and here; there is a reason for this. The Fulcrum is actually WORTH buying now. By god, it’s almost zippy. It’s enjoyable to fly, and it even has mildly cool paint schemes occasionally. It’s a fighter who’s stock is on the rise.

7. F-20A Tigershark - $33,000

60 Missiles
10 SAAM
8 GPB ($12,000)
12 XAGM ($13,300)

I don’t really see the point of buying this plane, unless you’re just a fan of it. It’s the same as the AC5 version, except the paint schemes are cooler. Otherwise, just save your money for later aircraft.

8. F-16C Fighting Falcon - $31,500

60 Missiles
12 XMAA
8 LAGM ($11,300)
14 UGBL ($12,600)

It’s pretty agile, it’s not sluggish, and it’s still relatively cheap, especially given the large UGBL load. I saved my money here, but if you want the F-16C, go ahead and buy it, because you certainly won’t regret doing so.

9. F/A-18C Hornet - $36,000

64 Missiles
10 LASM
8 SAAM ($14,400)
12 SOD ($13,000)

…and this is why I told you to save your money. The Hornet carries Standoff Dispensers, and Standoff Dispensers are really, really fun. Also, it has yaw performance fit to light your controller on fire, and it carries a substantial load of regular missiles. A great plane for the time it becomes available.

10. A-10A Thunderbolt II - $40,500

64 Missiles
10 XAGM
10 FAEB ($19,400)
16 RCL ($14,600)

Do you need a dedicated ground attack fighter that can withstand a nuclear explosion, has a gun the size of Cuba, and can level entire zip codes with the FAEB? Well, here you go. Great for mission 7, for instance. Or anything involving ground targets.

11. MiG-31 Foxhound - $55,000

70 Missiles
12 XLAA
10 QAAM ($19,900)
12 UGBL ($22,100)

Completely. Pointless. Oh sure, it’s faster than god and its size can be compared with the land areas of several eastern European nations, but it’s so sluggish, it can’t yaw, and the special weapons inventory just doesn’t make up for those things. Also, way too expensive for its capability range.

12. Mirage 2000D - $49,500

64 Missiles
14 UGB
10 GPB ($17,800)
14 XAGM ($19,800)

Much more useful than the dumb old Foxhound, the Mirage has more practical speed, it’s small, it’s agile, and it has dual machine guns. And it can carry the GPB, for area-of-effect death without all that annoying aiming. Also, it can yaw!

13. EA-6B Prowler - $50,500

66 Missiles
5 ECMP
8 LAGM ($23,400)
4 QAAM ($25,700)

Yeah, it’s a jammer. But so what? It’s not very fast. That said, it’s acceptably agile, doesn’t look too bad, and it carries the Rocket UGBL (LAGM). I saved my money, but if you want one, go for it. Just be sure you know what you’re doing…

14. Su-27 Flanker - $64,000

72 Missiles
16 XMAA
8 UGBL ($22,900)
12 SFFS ($25,500)

Hold on a second, I’m basking in the greatness. Sell all your other planes and buy this NOW. Look at those weapons loads! You can do anything with this plane, and be quite satisfied with how it turns out. It’s just awesome!

15. F-15C Eagle - $87,500

70 Missiles
16 XMAA
10 UGBL ($31,500)
14 QAAM ($35,000)

It’s the Su-27 again, except it costs so much more…therefore, why would you buy it? If you’re a fan, I guess, or if you just hate Russian planes, or…well, how should I know?

16. X-29A - $81,000

60 Missiles
10 QAAM
4 FAEB ($42,000)
10 LAGM ($32,300)

…heheh. It’s so easy to throw this little plane around, so it’s exceptional for close-in dogfighting. The only off-putting thing about the X-29A, besides its low missile load, is the fact that the FAEBs it can carry are nearly as big as the plane itself…

17. F-14D Super Tomcat - $76,000

72 Missiles
14 XLAA
10 GPB ($38,400)
14 NPB ($27,400)

It’s cheap, given it’s weapons load, and holy crap is it fast. Fans will be satisfied, but if you’re not a diehard Tomcat guy, save your cash for the quickly approaching uber fighters.

18. JAS-39C Gripen - $72,000

60 Missiles
12 RCL
8 XLAA ($31,000)
14 SOD ($26,000)

Totally made over from AC5, the Gripen is now one of the game’s most annoying enemy fighters. It’s small, and whoa is it agile. Those weapons loads may leave something to be desired, but I’d still pick this fighter up, because it’s just so agile this time around.

19. F-16XL Cranked Arrow - $81,000

68 Missiles
14 XAGM
10 SAAM ($32,300)
8 BDSP ($28,100)

If you wanna kill things on the ground, here you go. And with the F-16XL, there are so many ways you can do it. Air combat, on the other hand…well…it’s not horrible, but there are better planes in this price range for that.

20. Tornado GR.4 - $81,000

72 Missiles
12 BDSP
4 ECMP ($35,600)
12 LASM ($29,200)

Another ground attack plane, although you can stick a jammer of limited effect on it. Between this and the F-16XL, I’d still take the F-16XL because of the XAGM capability that it has.

21. F-2A Viper Zero - $95,000

72 Missiles
12 LASM
20 XMAA ($41,800)
14 SFFS ($38,000)

Another price jump, but the F-2A is well worth it. I find that the Viper Zero is a good plane to use during your first playthrough of mission 9. And hey, it’s got cluster bombs in large numbers, which are a good thing to have no matter what.

22. F-15E Strike Eagle - $100,000

76 Missiles
14 SFFS
10 SAAM ($39,900)
14 GPB ($35,900)

It’s really a toss up between the F-15E and the F-2A for this price range’s best strike fighter. Make your choice depending on if you’re a bomb guy (GPB) or a missiles guy (LASM), and which air special weapon suits your style better.

23. F-117A Nighthawk - $109,000

54 Missiles
16 GPB
12 LAGM ($39,300)
8 QAAM ($41,800)

Fairly pointless, although the LAGM load redeems it somewhat. Just too expensive. Stay with the F-2A/F-15E for this price range.

24. F-35C JSF - $126,000

76 Missiles
14 LASM
16 SOD ($45,400)
10 QAAM ($50,400)

Worth every penny. If you can grab it, do so, as the F-35 is the first bonafide get-you-to-the-end fighter you can buy. And, relatively, it’s cheap compared to the upper echelon of fighters in the game.

25. EA-18G Growler - $109,000

74 Missiles
6 ECMP
8 XMAA ($43,700)
10 LAGM ($39,300)

Tries to do too many things well, and if you have access to the F-35C, you won’t care about it anyway. Save your money.

26. Rafale M - $103,500

74 Missiles
14 LASM
16 XMAA ($41,400)
14 SOD ($37,300)

Cheaaaaap. And incredible. Finally, the Rafale is in the upper echelon of fighters. If you can buy it, do so.

27. Eurofighter Typhoon - $117,000

78 Missiles
14 XLAA
16 SOD ($46,800)
12 SFFS ($42,100)

Sure, it was a great air to air fighter, but now it’s got such a selection of ground killing devices you could damn near call it a multirole plane.

28. Su-32 Strike Flanker - $115,000

80 Missiles
16 XAGM
14 LAGM ($41,300)
12 XMAA ($45,900)

I’m a bit suspicious about using this plane as an air to air fighter, but go have a blast with ground targets, as there may not be a better dedicated attacker in the whole game.

29. YF-23A Black Widow II - $133,000

80 Missiles
12 QAAM
12 NPB ($47,900)
10 BDSP ($53,200)

Really an air to air fighter, but the BDSP is never a bad thing. However, what the hell is one of the most high-tech fighters ever made doing carrying napalm bombs? I’m confused.

30. F-15S/MTD Eagle - $154,000

80 Missiles
8 FAEB
14 XLAA ($61,600)
16 SOD ($55,400)

My favorite plane in the entire game. It can do anything; level whole worlds with the FAEB, strike at enemy air with the XLAA, spread the death around with the SOD, anything. And, obviously, it’s the best looking of the bunch.

31. Su-47 Berkut - $167,000

82 Missiles
14 SAAM
16 SFFS ($66,700)
12 BDSP ($60,000)

Why can’t they just give this plane the QAAM? Sheesh. At any rate, it’s really a toss up. I didn’t buy it, because I hate the SAAM. You may love the SAAM, and should thus buy it posthaste.

32. Su-37 Terminator - $130,000

82 Missiles
16 XLAA
8 FAEB ($67,900)
10 NPB ($52,200)

It’s another version of the F-15S/MTD, basically. But really, what’s with the napalm bombs? I’m seriously not understanding that.

33. F/A-22A Raptor - $101,000

82 Missiles
18 XMAA
12 GPB ($65,200)
12 SOD ($72,500)

Sure, everyone loves the Raptor, but don’t be going about using it for ground attack missions, as there are way more capable fighters for that sorta work.

34. X-02A Wyvern - $215,000

84 Missiles
14 XLAA
14 QAAM ($77,400)
16 XAGM ($86,000)

I’d like to point out that the Wyvern is a horrible ground attack fighter. Otherwise, it’ll kill everything that flies, dreams of flying, or may have flown in the past.

35. ADFX-01 Morgan - $322,500

84 Missiles
7 TLS
8 MPBM ($193,500)
8 ECMP ($116,100)

It’s the ultimate plane. Well, it carries the ultimate weapon, the MPBM. Burst missile my ass…the MPBM is equivalent to a tactical nuke, and can be aimed at any target. Use it for great justice.

36. ADF-01 Falken - $430,000

14 TLS
18 XLAA ($137,600)
8 FAEB ($206,400)

No, THIS is the ultimate plane. As you can probably tell by the weapons loadouts, it can be used for damn near anything you want. If only it weren’t so incredibly expensive…

--- 1.5 - The Missions ---

Walkthrough time! This is very simple and straightforward…except for the parts where it’s not simple and straightforward. At such parts, explanations will ensue.

Oh, by the way, you can’t switch Pixy’s plane. Sorry. But you can switch his special weapon.

-- Mission the First: Glacial Skies –

Plane: J-35J/SAAM, Pixy: XMAA

Oh noes! Enemy bombers are approaching your airbase, and since your airbase getting blasted to atoms is not a good thing, you’re sent up to go off them. Easy mission. Special weapon/air-disperse Pixy, and go kill the bombers, which include some B-52s and the super-experimental ultra-top-secret BM-335s, which carry guns in the back that shall blow you to bits if you aren’t very careful.

You’ll be a winner once all the bombers have been smoked.

-- Mission the Second: Annex –

Plane: F-1/UGB, Pixy: XMAA

Those damn Belkans have cut off a big supply route, which has ticked off the Ustio military to no end. Therefore, you are to go out there and level the enemy Armored Corps that is clogging up the route. Pixy should be special weaponed and dispersed to the air, and you should go bomb the living daylights out of the enemy target vehicles. The last great big pow-wow of targets to the north contains a great many SAMs, which are very dangerous. If you’re not paying attention, you will die very fast.

All targets destroyed = mission complete.

-- Mission the Third: The Round Table –

Plane: J-35J/SAAM, Pixy: XMAA

The first half is easy enough…special weapon/air disperse Pixy, and go about killing planes. After a certain time, or, after you have cleared the skies, an enemy ace squadron will appear. Which squadron appears depends on your ace style. They are:

- Mercenary: Rot Team -

Flight of four Typhoons. Very fast, very agile, and very, very mean. One Typhoon will occasionally go out and launch an XLAA at you, so be careful.

- Soldier: Grun Team -

Flight of four F/A-18Cs. Gang up on you, and use SAAMs and various other nasty things.

- Knight: Indigo Team -

Flight of four JAS-39Cs. Use XLAAs in obscene numbers, and will chase you all over the place, and that includes right into enemy ambushes.

Whichever squadron you defeat will unlock that plane for you to buy, but good luck affording anything other than the F/A-18C.

-- Mission the Fourth: Juggernaut –

It’s pick-a-mission time!

- A/Gelnikos –

Level the port facilities and shoot down the fighters guarding them. Takes place at the south end of the canal.

- B/Round Hammer –

Smoke the ports and the Belkan fleet north of the canal. There are planes, but they aren’t targets.

- C/Costner –

This one actually happens in the canal. Defend the fleet from incoming enemy aircraft. Oh, and be careful, because the enemies in this game can actually AIM. Allied ships will be sunk if you screw up.

-- Mission the Fifth: Flicker of Hope --

Plane: F/A-18C/LASM or F-1/LASM, Pixy: XMAA

Fairly simple. This mission has you sweeping the town of Solis Ortus for anti-aircraft sites. Simply blow away the SAMs at long range with the LASM to avoid evil damage.

Later on, enemy fighters, F-20As and F-16s among them, will begin harassing your transports. You obviously know what to do at this point. Pixy, air-dispersed and special weaponed, can help you with these.

Oh, and be sure to find the A-10A ace Fischer in this mission, as killing him will unlock the plane…and you’re seriously gonna need it in a few minutes…draw him out of hiding by destroying each and every red and green ground target, then look in the west for his plane to appear on radar.

-- Mission the Sixth: Diapason –

Plane: A-10A/FAEB, Pixy: XMAA

It’s time to get your liberation on. Using the FAEB, it’s easy to absolutely level everything in each of the five Belkan-controlled sectors. Beware of the sparse air-resistance, however, and try to defend the little tank unit that asks for your help, if you feel like it.

Yay! Directus is liberated! …wait a second, what are those two little blips approaching…?

- Gelb Squadron -

Composed of two Su-37s, Gelb is only mildly annoying. However, they can shoot missiles backwards. That = bad. With this wisdom in mind, keep your distance when approaching them, and try to smack them from head-on if you feel you can dodge their missiles in time.

-- Mission the Seventh: Bastion –

Plane: A-10A/FAEB, Pixy: XMAA

The first of two score-limited missions, and also a mission with a return line, so don’t worry about conserving ammo. Whenever you, say, run out of FAEBs, simply scurry back across the white-dotted line of happiness located to the south to restock.

Otherwise, peg everything on your way to sector A, and use FAEBs on both the initial defense position and the main sector A control tower. When you’ve leveled that, your radar will light up with hundreds of targets. The ramparts are southwest, the very dangerous AA site is northeast, and the ACC…whatever that is…is northwest of you if you’re in sector A. If you can get to the ACC site fast enough you can drop FAEBs and destroy many AV-8B Harriers, earning mucho points.

A successful mission is this when you reach 16,000 points.

-- Mission the Eighth: Merlon –

It’s pick-a-mission time again!

- A/Alpha Team –

Involves your destructing of a large enemy ground facility, with no air resistance to speak of.

- B/Beta Team –

Same as A, though the enemy base is bigger…and there are fighters, too.

- C/Theta Team –

Sweep the skies of enemy fighters! There’s an F-20A whining about being chased by three or so MiG-29As…but since he’s flying an F-20A, he deserves whatever he gets. Also, beware of random AV-8Bs appearing near the end.

Regardless of the mission you just picked, at the successful completion of the objectives, a Very Bad Thing will occur:

-- Excalibur –

Yes, you will be shot at by a blue beam of death coming from the heavens. Yes, that blue beam is a laser. Yes, you are VERY far away from the return line in the south that you need to cross to survive. In order to avoid the Belkan bug zapper, the first rule you must observe is never go faster than about 650 knots. The next rule you should follow is never go in a straight line for more than about four seconds. To escape, watch your radar for the large red circle that marks Excalibur’s next incoming shot. To avoid the laser, turn your plane at about a 90 degree angle away from that circle. Rinse and repeat. Remember that Excalibur’s laser will ALWAYS be in front of your current path of travel when it fires.

Crossing the return line in the south means that you lived. And that the mission is complete.

-- Mission the Ninth: Sword of Annihilation –

Plane: F-2A/LASM or X-29A/FAEB

As tradition dictates, it’s now time to go flying directly at the thing that just tried to vaporize you. Simply disperse Pixy for this mission…as there are basically zero air targets, his SP weapon also doesn’t really matter.

The first thing you’ve got to do is avoid the bug zapper…again. There are four jammers, arranged conveniently in a row, that must be blasted to bits before you can engage the laser itself…oh, and speaking of the laser, it’ll be shooting at you this whole time. To avoid it, look at your radar. If you’re in the big red streak of doom, fly very fast until you’re not in the big red streak of doom. Don’t try to hide by terrain masking, as the damn thing can shoot through the hills. As for the jammers, peg them with machine guns. Also, be aware of the mysterious SAM-less missiles that will be shot at you. Or maybe that’s just on my copy of the game…

Anyway, at the time of jammer destruction, turn towards the big laser tower itself. Around the base of said tower are four power generating stations. Crush them. Be very, very, VERY careful in this area, as Excalibur is protected by railway-borne bug zappers. It takes four missiles each to neutralize this laser artillery. With that done, it’s time to fight the man himself…or itself. Whatever. To shut the laser up, pound away at the big crystal on the very top. LASMs are quite useful for this purpose. When the crystal is broken, unload with every weapon you’ve got mounted on your plane at the meaty middle of the Excalibur tower. With each hit it takes, the tower will lean, so watch out. The mission is a success when you’ve blown the tower off the...well, tower.

-- Mission the Tenth: Mayhem –

Plane: Su-27/XMAA

Finally, a good old dogfighting mission. Stick XMAAs on both your planes and air-disperse Pixy. Proceed then to shoot down the many enemy fighters on your radar. Be careful of the occasional Su-37, as these guys are not Gelb-class pushovers. When you’ve pretty much cleared the air, the mission is…not over yet.

More aces! Depending on your current style, you’ll get:

- Mercenary: Schwarze Team –

Eight MiG-31s They fly around in big clusters, so if you can get behind one, you’ll be able to peg at least one more in the same pass. That said, don’t let them get far away, or expect an XLAA up your exhaust nozzle.

- Soldier: Schnee Team –

Five F-14Ds with an EA-6B jammer flying support. Kill the jammer FIRST, otherwise, you won’t be able to see anything on radar, and that is really uncool in this situation. Also, these guys have XLAAs too, so be aware of seemingly random missile alerts that come with no enemy behind you.

- Knight: Silber Team –

An F-4E and four F-16Cs. If you kill the F-4E first, then the F-16Cs will get all out of whack and be easier to deal with. Probably the least annoying of the three teams.

Depending on the team you just killed, you’ll get a new plane to play with. At the very least, a special paint scheme will be unlocked for you.

-- Mission the Eleventh: The Inferno –

Plane: Typhoon/SOD or Su-37/FAEB, if you can afford them…if not, the F-2A/SFFS will do

XMAA and air-disperse for Pixy…you’ll need both in a little bit. Go about destroying the ground targets, and the yellow facilities if you’re so evil, and be on the look out for SAMs of pain. Also, a pair of F-15Es will harass a tank unit of yours in the south, so defend if you feel up to it. When all the ground targets are gone, enemy fighters will begin to arrive. Blast those, and a squadron of F-35Cs will appear. Be very, very, very careful, especially if you’re using the F-2A, as these guys have massive skill. Two random B-2As also appear with this group...I guess they’re partaking in some self-bombing or something. All fighters and bombers down means a complete mission for you.

-- Mission the Twelfth: The Stage of Apocalypse –

Plane: Su-27/XMAA, F-15C/XMAA, or Typhoon/XLAA if you have it

Hi ho, hi ho, it’s off to Sudentor we go! Fly northeast, and set Pixy to air-disperse with QAAMs equipped. On the way, you’ll be interrupted with the trivial matter of a squad of Belkan bombers loaded to the gills with nuclear devices making an attempt on Ustio. Oh, phooie. Fly directly north now until you see the bombers, and get to work. There are about a million F-15Es in this flight, and they’ll all be shooting at you, so fly accordingly.

With the bombers down, the world is again safe for conventional warfare. Look south at the sun, bask in its glory…and oh crap there’s a nuclear explosion. At this point, Pixy-dict Arnold will turn traitor and start shooting at you, so evade with great vigor until another enemy squadron arrives. Pixy will run like the cowardly bastard he is after a while, so focus on the enemy. Shoot them down to complete the mission.

-- Mission the Thirteenth: Lying in Deceit –

Plane: Something with FAEBs on it…

Hey, this place seems familiar…anyway, the new Galm 2 is…PJ! And he’s almost useless. XMAA and disperse for him. You, meanwhile, should go about leveling everything in sight with FAEBs. Also, there’s a return line to the west for the purposes of rearming, so blast away! Be wary of enemy air, as there’s a lot of it, especially when you start blowing things up.

Nothing else to know here, except that that’s a really big hangar over there…score 20,000 points to complete the mission.

-- Mission the Fourteenth: The Final Overture –

Pick a mission, any mission!

- Mars Team –

An anti-ship and anti-surface mission loaded with annoying SAMs and missile boats. Lots of yellow targets too, for you mercenary types out there.

- Mercury Team –

Anti-surface mission with about eight million JAS-39Cs flying out of the tunnels, so pick a plane with good agility and stick a surface weapon on it.

- Jupiter Team –

A big dogfight, loaded with EA-6B jammers and randomly appearing JAS-39Cs…again. This is also the only opportunity you’ll get to shoot down an enemy E-767.

-- Mission the Fifteenth: The Talon of Ruin –

Plane: Typhoon/XLAA or Su-37/XLAA would be really, really great…

Enjoy the cutscene.

After that, prepare to face down the XB-0 Hresvelgr, a bomber of considerable uberness. The mission itself is extremely straightforward, as basically everything is a target, including Espada Team, which you should probably go about shooting down first off. Save your XLAAs and just hammer them at close range. Dispense with the J-35J first, then deal with the Rafale M. After that, get to launching XLAAs at the targets on Hresvelgr. After you’ve blown up the two large groups of targets, get in front of the uberplane and send some missiles into the cockpit. Be very careful, as the large things around the cockpit seem to be machine missile-launchers. Nuke the XB-0 totally to win the mission.

-- Mission the Sixteenth: The Demon of the Round Table –

Plane: Su-37/FAEB

In theory, quite simple; break through the Round Table by defeating a final enemy ace squadron. In practice, it’s harder than melting wood. Your ace style determines your foe.

- Mercenary: Sorceror Squadron –

Eight F-15S/MTDs, and possibly the hardest enemies in the game. Do not fly straight, ever, and fire quickly when you have a lock, then break off. Don’t follow through. And good luck, buddy.

- Soldier: Gault Squadron –

Eight Su-47s. They tend to fly predictably after a while, but once again, avoid flying straight at all costs. Just concentrate on one at a time, and after a while it’ll get easier…but not much easier.

- Knight: Wizard Squadron –

Four YF-23s and four…F-16XLs? The F-16s are easy enough to smoke, but avoid the YF-23s until you’re done with them. The YF-23s are also stealthy and will vanish off radar, so hold the Triangle button to keep track of them. Also, no flying straight of any kind ever.

-- Mission the Seventeenth: The Valley of Kings –

Plane: Whatever you had before

This would pretty much be it. It’s up to you to stop the end of the world, as usual, so here’s how you go about it.

To reach the dam, fly low in the canyon, but fly as fast as you possibly can to avoid the SAMs. You can use up to two FAEBs here, but you must save at least SIX of them for what’s coming up next. When you get to the dam, you can elect to destroy the guntowers, which is a good idea, and engage the enemy fighters that appear. Whatever you decide, do it fast. Anyway, you’ll note that there are holes in the floor of the dam. Fly into either the northernmost or southernmost hole, and follow the tunnel to the three sets of lock joints. Drop two FAEBs at each site to destroy the joints and the control device that pops up afterwards. When the three sites are destroyed, the mission is done.

And the world…is saved! The V2 launch is stopped, and no nuclear death will be occurring today!

…gee, look at that plane over there…my my, that’s a familiar paint scheme…huh?

-- Mission the Last: Zero –

Plane: Whatever you had before

It’s very much on now. Pixy the Traitor has returned to face you in a final Duel of Full Circleness, except he’s not flying the F-15C. Oh no, he’s flying the Belkan secret giga-plane of death. This battle occurs in three stages:

- Stage the First –

Pixy will flip some switches or something and turn on…his TLS. His laser can sweep the skies, front and rear, so avoiding it is kind of a matter of luck at some points. Peg him with six missiles and he’ll…

- Stage the Second –

…switch to using his burst missiles. Stay behind him now, because he’ll just randomly launch burst missiles in front of his path of travel, and running into the resulting explosions is a very bad idea. Six more missiles in the keister and he’ll…

- Stage the Last –

…turn on his Ultra ECMP defense system. Now, you’ll need to follow the strategy of flying faaaaaaaaaaaar away from him, doubling back to fly at him, launching missiles at his cockpit, and turning away fast to avoid the missile he launches back at you. Six missiles in the face, and Pixy will finally bite the bullet.

Congratulations! The mission and the game are won!
