Overview:
The A-6E Intruder is an all-weather, two-seat, subsonic, carrier-based attack aircraft. It was put into production in early 1963 and was delivered to the U.S Navy throughout the 1960s and 1970s. It saw extended action in the Vietnam War, and participated in strike operations in Libya and the Persian Gulf during Operation: Desert Storm. Its career spanned an astounding 34 years and developed a reputation as a workhorse of the navy, favouring a heavy weapons load and excellent reliability.
It is notable for having an extremely durable airframe and can withstand a substantial amount of damage in combat. It has the ability to fly low, underneath radar, and was called to execute solo missions during the conflict in Vietnam to do precision strike operations deep inside enemy territory. As the aircraft would be called upon in later decades it would also be upgraded to carry laser-guided munitions and advanced navigation equipment. It was eventually phased out of service, with its retirement in 1997 from the U.S. Navy.
