I doubt the limit is the console itself or its tech, having to come up and actually create a few dozen or more paths with the same degree of development and pathos present in AC3 is not practical at all.
I'm more than satisfied the way they did it. They branched the plot in as many ways as possible while keeping them
different,
developed enough, and above all, keeping this
action game
lean (always paramount).
Bogging AC3 down with unnecessary 'fat' typical to JRPGs just wouldn't fly. Someone on these boards said a long time ago that the original plan was to have AC3 be on 4CDs... Whether or not this info is true or not doesn't really matter, but in a time where 2CD+ games were all the rage in Japan, 4CDs in my Ace Combat just wouldn't fly with me, as much as I revere every second this game has to offer. The pacing of AC3 is one of its best assets in my opinion. Not one second wasted.
Also posting a link to what I call the
"True Ending" translated by fellow team member pmt7ar and me some time ago, as it is VERY relevant to the this topic and helps clear up some important things.
