OVERVIEW:
After the success of the R-101, Neucom quickly made a second aircraft geared for Ground Attack. It was to work alongside the R-101 Delphinus. The R-201 Asterozoa's design had and still is, one of the most 'Radical' Designs made by Neucom Inc. With its double COFFIN, Podded design it was thought to be a little out-landish. There also was a speed problem and it was vulnerable to high speed interceptors.

It wasn't until 2040 that the Asterozoa showed that it was an amazing ground attacker, despite its short comings. Along with the R-101, is sold very well. By the middle of the war, it was replaced by the R-211 Orcinus within Neucom control. It continued to operate within the Universal Peace Enforcement Organization as the R-201U.

Could be that it has advanced weapons controls or an EW suite?

I'm not sure but it could be that the Asterozoa is a long range craft and another pilot could take over, or it could be like the De Havilland Sea Vixen. Read this.

"The pilot's canopy is offset to the left hand side. The observer is housed to the right completely within the fuselage, gaining access through a flush-fitting top hatch into his position (known in the service as the "coal hole") which had a small window."

The second pod could be for an observer or navigator or just avionics?
"Woah!"Me recieving new sig from Reynard Fox. Thanks Rey!

You don't need an observer/navigator with COFFIN, that's the whole point of the system

Extra-redundancy of brain-power? Just consider this is the first attacker Neucom has ever built, they don't know will the COFFIN works perfectly etc etc..

2 brains would be hard as hell to synchronize, and you certainly need to do that unless you want the plane to shred itself in midair. The other solution would be having only one pilot working at a time, but that would be rather useless, as fatigue is not a problem with COFFIN and the co-pilot would be dead weight for the better part of the trip.
