Overview:
The Nimrod is perhaps the most capable maritime reconnaissance platform outfitted to detect and destroy hostile submarines that served in the Falklands War and Operation TELIC. The airframe is based on that of the de Havilland Comet airliner but with new engines and an enlarged lower fuselage containing a weapons bay. Other operational variants are the R.1 reconnaissance craft and the MRA.4, which is equipped with new engines, upgraded avionics and compatibility with new weapons. The AEW.3 was a proposed AEW&C plane proposed for RAF service, but the E-3D Sentry was adopted instead.
