OVERVIEW:
While developing the X-49 under General Resources, the DOE team began to come under ethical pressure due to the revolutionary OPTONEURON system that was to be used in the X-49 and they also had difficulties with GR's upper management thus leading to a project stoppage in 2031. The team subsequently moved to NEUCOM where they produced the XR-900.

The XR-900 Geopelia is a high agility, unmanned fighter. Using an advanced AI developed by NEUCOM, the XR-900 manages to evade the drawbacks of having to use the OPTONEURON system to pilot the craft, the AI is basically hacking resistant but damage increases the XR-900's vulnerability to hacking. Very similar to the X-49 in design, the plane shares the same engine and intake layout. Its wing design is similar to the X-49 as they are both bi-wing jets, but the Geopelia does not have Vertical stabilizers. This allows for more unstable handling of the aircraft. The XR-900 is faster than the X-49 but carries the same payload. Also, like the X-49 the Geopelia's main weapon is its Laser Cannon.

The XR-900 Geopelias are produced by Neucom Inc. at the end of the war in 2040.

The XR-900 Geopelia did see action once in History. In late 2040, a group of XR-900 lifted off from a Neucom Air Base and flew to Port Edwards. They then began to attack the city with laser ordinance. The General Resource Defense Force dispatched an AI Pilot to deal with them. After finally hacking into one of the XR-900 Geopelia, the pilot destroyed the other Geopelia. These Geopelia were believed to be pre-programmed by the Ouroboros, but nothing has been confirmed. Is this a flyable aircraft in the game? Also, can the X-49 be used, too?

Yeah you can fly this in one of the endings (GR I think). You fly An XFA-36 against a flight of these and when one gets damaged enough you get to hack into it. X-49 can be flown in the US version AFAIK you have to get A on all missions on hard as for AC3 JP I think you have to cheat.

Wait, I've heard that through using Gameshark; a prototype version of the XR-900 Geopleia; can be unlocked. It is called the YR-900; but what the difference is that its Heavy Laser Cannon is removed in turn for a 20MM Vulcan gatling gun, and its Aeon-powered engines removed for SCRAMjets. Also it is a bit smaller in size from what I heard and proves that the Geopelia can carry heavy equipment. Has anyone else heard of this 'YR-900"?

Fan made Buddy?No
Here is a screenshot of the YR-900 firing 20mm ammunition:

Now, take a close look, it has 6 blue engines. Whether the original had only 2:

I should also note that there are some minor differences in performance, and that the 6 blue engines have afterburning effects instead of Aeon particles coming out.

And here are some minor sources:

Isn't it notable that in the GBS news, there was a scene where the news helicopter gets hot downby the Geopelias?

Alright, belay my last. Going by the original strategy guide, the XR-900 is considered a UAV(should be UCAV). Appearently, the 900 has three modes: primary is the advanced AI(another NEMO type created by Simon?), then secondary would be the back-up COFFIN spine cockpit(ala Stealth), last would be remote SATCOM piloting(last resort).

It's not UCAV. The GR ending clearly shows it has a cockpit.

The "YR-900" was the same size as the XR-900. This was discussed in an old BBS called "Michirou's Ace Combat 3 BBS" from long ago where they discussed why it was even in the game data. Someone mentioned that the YR-900 was originally going to be the "final" production version of the X-49 using conventional technology such as normal engines and weapons instead the "experimental" Aeon Engines and Laser Cannon of the NightRaven. The second version of the YR-900 opted to retain the "X" designation because it shared the same characteristics as the X-49, such as the hybrid conventional engines and Aeon Engines, Laser Cannon and the ability to use the OSL and missiles. Someone also pointed out how it was strange of NAMCO to release the Appendisc with the release data for the X-49, since that made it look like that was the only way to unlock the fighter; at least at the time it did.
