Balaur
-Valahian Rail Gun-

The Balaur installed in Valahia's base in Romania.

GAMES FEATURED IN:
Ace Combat X2: Joint Assault

Operators:
Valahia

OVERVIEW:
The Balaur railgun is the main armament of the Spiridus, it is located in the center of the box-wing design. In order to fire the Balaur, a massive amount of energy is needed per discharge. As energy is built in the center of the airframe, heat vents located at the rear of the Spiridus aide in cooling the rail gun firing and charging components. By disrupting or destroying the heat vents, the energy being gathered for the Balaur must be released before major damage is caused to the rail gun. A ground based version was also built and acted as a long-range weapon, capable of firing on aircraft with radar assistance from radar facilities within its firing range. Even if the Balaur does not make a direct impact with its rail gun cannon shell, the shockwaves emitted from the hypersonic cannon shell are enough to rip an aircraft apart.

During the raid of Tokyo by the Valahia, the Spiridus utilized the destructive power of the Balaur to attack the city. The Martinez Security M42 Squadron was dispatched attack the Spiridus and thus stop the Balaur's attacks. As energy was charged for further attacks against Tokyo, Antares One successfully damaged the heat vent system and knocked the Balaur out of action temporarily. The Spiridus suffered damage before it escaped the area and disappeared somewhere over the Izu Islands. The Spiridus later reappeared over London, and despite the fighting that occured afterward, it was only during the final moments of the Spiridus' flight did the Balaur come into action. An attempt was made to fire the Balaur at London's capital building as the fortress lost altitude, but this was not possible due to loss of control. The Spiridus would crash into the Thames soon after the attempt.

A second Balaur railgun would appear at a Valahian base in Romania, this time in the form of a standalone ground cannon. After unsuccessfully attempting to shoot down International Union Peacekeeping Force aircraft in Serbia with radar assistance, the base would come under attack. Firing the Balaur at the incoming aircraft with the assistance of three small electronic warfare stations surrounding it, the Balaur's defenses were tight. However, the jamming facilities and railgun barrel were eventually destroyed. Desperate, the Valahia troops stationed in the area fired everything they had at the attacking force, even RPG's. Their efforts were fruitless, as Antares One destroyed the rest of Balaur along with most of the Valahian forces in the area.

Of course.
I have one doubt: should we cover the Spiridus' Balaur here, or in the Spiridus page (leaving this one for the standalone railgun)=?

I typed up a quick article. If anyone remember where that second rail gun is, be sure to let me know. I'd check right now, but I can't find my PSP charge cord at the moment...

Added main picture. I took some, but they're not nearly as good. Always got an annoying Warning on the screen.

... if that's a castle, this thing is massive. ._O

Reminds me of one of Saddam's railguns in Conflict: Desert Storm II.

Ack, wrong term. They weren't electromagnetic railguns; I was using the train-track rail gun, but that's the wrong term, lol. They were superguns.
