Overview:
The F-2 is a Japanese domestically-developed 4th-generation fighter based on the F-16 airframe, but with a 25% larger wing and reshaped tail faring. It is designed to replace the F-1 in Japanese service. Though fully-capable of air-to-air combat, the F-2 is optimized for ground attack and maritime shipping patrol. Using an advanced avionics suite developed by Mitsubishi and new actively-scanned array radar, the F-2 has excellent air and ground tracking ability, with the capability to fire a multitude of ranged surface-attack weapons. Overall performance is similar to the Block 50/52 F-16C Fighting Falcon, albeit the installation of an uprated F110 turbofan engine. Unique about the fighter is the allowance of certain radar-absorbent materials applied to the leading edges of the aircraft. 141 were planned to be ordered by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, however due to cost-efficiency, suffered sever cutbacks to about 100 aircraft, due to the aircraft's 108 million dollar price tag.
EXPERIMENTAL SUMMARY: Constructed through an international consortium, the F-2A is an F-16-derived strike fighter featuring generation 4.5 components. Designed to succeed and improve upon the capability of the the old F-1A defense fighter and based off the defunct "Agile Falcon" alternative ATF concept, the F-2 features an advanced active electronically scanned array radar, advanced composites, a powerful F110-129 turbofan engine, and superior anti-surface combat capability. Despite its heavier design and lower thrust-to-weight ratio, the F-2A's performance remains comparable to the lighter and more nimble F-16. Radar absorbent coatings applied to the aircraft's leading edges give it a reduced frontal radar signature to further aid in its attack role. Yet despite all its advantages over the F-16, the F-2 carries with it a hefty price tag brought about through expensive licensing fees and a smaller-than-expected order from its home market.
