The R-40, aka AA-6 "Acrid", was a long range air to air missile developed by the Soviet Union in the 1960s for interceptors. Development began in 1962 by Bisnovat Design Bureau. The resulting R-40 was designed for use by the MiG-25 Foxbat.

After the defection of the Foxbat pilot Viktor Belenko, the aircraft was redesigned with upgraded electronics and radar among other things. The missile was upgraded as well in its electronics and some other aspects. This missile was known as the R-40D. Production of the R-40 ended in 1991, but it remains in limited service arming surviving MiG-25 and some MiG-31 interceptors.
