The "Star Wars" program was not really intended for nuclear strike. It was mainly devised to protect against nuclear strikes, destroy hostile space systems, and having the ability to deliver high powered, non nuclear weapons in a counter-attack. Weapons such as space based kinetic energy systems, which can pack enough power to make a 2,000 lb bomb look like a firecracker. In fact, with a large/dense enough projectile, you can attain energy releases comparable to small tactical nuclear weapons, but without the radiation hazard. Also considering most all of these systems were unmanned it wouldn't have been as expensive as you may think.

What the Strategic Defence Inititive[SDI(Star Wars)] would've been is space baced X-ray lasers for use in destrying Soviet ICBMs. It never got off of paper , but scared the s#!+ out of the Soviet ruler at the time.

What is funny is that elements of the Star Wars program still exist to this day. You know the ABL? That is one of the surviving ideas coming from the Star Wars program. Another idea that is still floating around is the KE projectile carrying satellites, although now they may replace satellites with ballistic missiles due to cost/weight/treaty issues. Though, the big problem with that is how to distinguish a conventional ballistic missile from a nuclear one...

That deals with weapons. SDI was a space based ABM(Anti-Ballistic Missile) system. Ok, This discussion should be moved to a new topic as to not incur the wrath of the Ribbons.

Mind as well add more images instead of one blurry image.
