Yeah, the names need to be corrected. Though I have seen MAKOS spelt MRKOS as well. But the latter may be a typo. Also, since the theme of this game is asteroids and stuff falling from space in general, the Aces are named after comets (TUTTLE, TEMPEL, HALLEY etc).

One of the Ace's paint scheme (DE VICO) says "FREE ERUSIA". So I would assume why these are called Free Erusian Aces. Also MAKOS (misspelled as MAROS) is really MRKOS, a comet discovered by Antonin Mrkos, which makes sense as a majority of the Ace's names are comets or some sort of celestial object.

Strange, it really doesn't make sense when they're the antagonist faction of the game. Erusea is a Federal Republic IIRC.

Many types of governments use the term "Republic" as a masquerade; from the fact that the Storyteller Boy yells "Get out of our town, you Fascist pig!" at Thirteen, and from the fact that, in the Farbanti siege, the body covered in medals is assumed to be the Erusian President, I think we can assume that Erusea was some sort of militarist dictatorship.

Erusia is sort of an odd ball its Fascist but its leader seems to be a general their are not many real fascist nations whose leader was a general as opposed to simple right wing authoritarianism. also republic only means there is no monarch and federal means that power is devolved (though in Fascist states this is usually only on paper)
